Reflections, is that really me?

Over the last 2 weeks I have discovered that looking at ones self is quite a scary thing. Daunting even. You need to be able look at yourself for whom you are, whom you really are and while doing that not lie to yourself. Try it some day; it is not as easy as it sounds. Lying to yourself is the easiest thing in the world to do.

But back to the point - who am I? Well to be honest I have to admit finally that I have quite a split personality. I do not believe it requires medications (Yet) but I see there are for sure two distinct sides to my personality.

You have the conformist side, trying to fit in with the world around me. Saying what he should, when he should and keeping an even keel with the people he knows. He tries to be agreeable to everyone and keep the feathers from flying (is that a saying?). He has been the ruling force in my daily life and my normal workdays. He keeps me employed at my day job and has kept me out of jail.

Then we flip the coin as they say and see the other side. Here you find the crazy, fuck the world, does what he wants, says what he thinks and has a “who cares” attitude towards everything side of my personality. He jokes around, makes everyone laugh (at him or with him – who cares). You will see him in the Bars of NYC, the Clubs in Vegas and anywhere else a glass of alcohol can be had. To clarify I do not need to be drunk to find this side, it is just the environments where he thrives! I know him well but I have done my best to keep control of him most of my life.

To be honest though it is side that I wish I could have turned on 24/7

So what does this have to do with the new show…well everything! As I said, if any show is going to be as successful as I hope it needs to come from deep inside. The show has to be about who I really am and who I want to be. So I have come to the conclusion that it is time to flip the switch and go for it. Let the Devil out of the box and set him free as it were. We will see now exactly what that mind will come up with for the show!

A Blank page as well...

Ok I lied. Yes you need a blank stage but also a blank page is very helpful as well. Magicians and a blank page though are dangerous together. It is time consuming and often costly to create a new show, especially from scratch. Let me explain. There are many ways to script a show in this industry:

1) Start with effects you have and know then put them together to form a show. This is nice because you know your material but it really limits where the show can go creatively

2) Put together your perfect show in your head, beginning to end with all the effects you have seen others do and that you like. You then learn / purchase what you need to do the show. This is an idea that many magicians that are just starting out try to do. This unfortunately is expensive and a disaster waiting to happen. Just because you like it does not mean you have the ability (mental or personality wise) to pull it off. Also it turns out just to be a mix of other peoples show.

3) (What I am attempting to do) Soul search… That is it. You need to find out who you are first. What type of effects do you perform best, what personality you have that gets the best audience reaction. Once you have that the rest is, sorry to say, uphill. You know have a personality now you need to build off of that. Take some of you best received effects, Learn some that can be adapted to your way of performing and then make a few up that no one has ever seen. (yea that is hard)

So here I am pen in hand soul searching…it is a hard thing trying to see who I really am and how I perform best. Brutal honesty is key to success, so here I go.

It always begins with a blank page, but for a performer it begins with a blank stage. Start anew, create…well MAGIC. Today I begin on a journey to create a new stage show. New never before seen acts that will, hopefully, blow your socks off. What I want to try now though is a little different, I want to bring my fans along for the ride. Let you get a behind the scenes look at this type of work in action, what you get BEFORE the curtain rises. I will try and fail many times before I am done. I will try new acts, tricks out on smaller audiences (Parks, clubs, small stages) and will post them for you to see them grow.

No I will not show how anything is done but I will hopefully give you all a greater understanding of the work that goes on backstage.

So here we go… Get in, sit down and enjoy the ride!

for all of you that have seen me perform you know i an a big fan of harry houdini. well my new t-shirt design is almost done and it is a tribute to harry houdini in a way. the main name is an ambigram of my name (richard glenn) when you look at it one way and harry houdini when you look at it the other way. The design is not 100% yet but when it is we will have them on sale here. what do you think?

Just got the news that my brother Daniel and his girlfriend are now expecting a baby. I am going to be an Uncle. Wow if he is not scared I totally am!

It is good to hear actually because I am the older of the siblings and it gets my mom off me and my wife’s back haha! (to be honest it will probably turn up the heat on us) Congrats Bro, love you! Look out June 16th, another one of us is coming!

I did all my design on my MacBook Pro Yesterday, looked good there! Turns out on a smaller screen, NOT so good. I will remedy that today. Good thing I am a magician and not a professional web designer - I would be out of a job!

OK all, welcome to the new site. New design and new format. I realize that though I know HTML, Photoshop and Flash a bit I am no web designer. Secondly I realized that updating the site like I wanted to was going to be a bit to difficult as well as tedious.

Therefor I figured that creating the site in a blog format worked well to accomplish these 2 goals (quick design as well as ability to post as much as I like). OK to be honest Photoshoping the background image took 2 hours to get it the way I wanted it too!

So I will be starting slow with the posts and working my up to more frequent ones.

For those of you following on twitter, all my posts will be dropped right in so you will know when I have added new content.

Well off to the races they say… see you all soon out or at one of the shows (PS a calendar is coming soon)
